Current Issue: Flood in Romania
In the week before last of August Romania was again hit by a devastating flood ( the fourth time this year). Areas that had not been affected by then were hit this time, but with an extreme severity. In the region of Harghita complete villages disappeared in the floods , roads and bridges were destroyed and the lovely town Odorhein-Secuise was flooded immediately.
There are a lot of casualties and there are still people being missed. Those who are familiar with life in Romania know that there are very small mud huts on the edges of the villages which often give shelter up to 10 people. These huts cannot hold any floods and the real number of people being killed will probably remain uncertain for a long time.

Many of the people being affected are now on the verge of ruin. Their houses are not fit to live in, the animals have been drowned and the crop has been destroyed. Being quartered in emergency accommodation most people do not have any idea of what their life will be like in the future.

Their own field, their garden and above all their animals ( pigs, geese, cows, sheep, goats etc. ) provide people with the most important goods as a basis for self- sufficiency. The destruction of the fields and the killing of the animals cause a complete loss of any basis of survival.
Romania is a poor country and compared to our regions disaster relief plans and special schemes for rebuilding are less supported or are not even in operation or do not achieve the desired effect. Unfortunately, the current situation is also abused for widespread looting and corruption.

Our action group “Rumänieninitiativgruppe” Bautzen has been working in the district of Harghita for 15 years now. We have been focusing on the work with children and young people of the children´s home in Chrituru-Secuese and recently on the social youth project Feherlofia and a foster family with a few children.
The activities of our action group Bautzen have been an essential part of our social work in this region for many years. Our trustworthy relations and contacts, our good experiences and reliable partnerships in this area allow us to offer support and financial help in an efficient way.
The aftermath of the flood means for many people an enormous lack of prospects. Therefore we intend to offer concrete help for the affected families.

We have close contact to the people who are in charge in the district of Harghita and who are prepared and able to organize immediate support.
This support is supposed for especially affected families for the following purposes:
We don´t consider organising transports of relief aid from Germany as very useful. It is possible to buy and get all necessary things in Romania. Transports from Germany are often expensive and not very efficient. With the help of donations affected families can get those things they really need.
If you want to support us , we would appreciate it to receive your donations.
